Interesting Fact(s): Fremont ran for U.S. President, in 1856, in the newly formed Republican Party - he was unsuccessful. Always controversial, Fremont, by military decree, imposed martial law, in Missouri, after Nathanial Lyon's defeat, at Wilson's Creek. This included the ability to confiscate property - including slaves. His mixing military strategy, with politics, ultimately led to his resignation from the army.
