Interesting Fact(s):    Stuart, practiced law, and was elected to Congress, from Michigan, in 1852.  Upon the start of the Civil War, he would become lieutenant colonel of the 42nd Illinois, and then colonel of the 55th Illinois.  At Shiloh, he would command a brigade, in William T. Sherman's division - holding the far left flank of the Union line.  While awaiting to be confirmed, as a brigadier general, he would command a division at Chickasaw Bayou and Arkansas Post.  After the Senate, for unknown reasons, rejected his appointment, he was removed from division command.  Highly praised, by the other army commanders, he was never confirmed and would retire from the army shortly afterwards.
