Interesting Fact(s):    Prentiss was a Republican candidate, for Congress, in 1860.  He would be commissioned as colonel, of the 10th Illinois, and in August, 1861, brigadier general.  He would lead the Sixth Division, of U.S. Grant's Army of the Tennessee, at Shiloh.  At Shiloh, his division would be caught, unprepared, as was the entire army, when Albert Sidney Johnston's Confederate army attacked.  He led his division with courage, at the Hornet's Nest, and would be captured.  In July, 1863, while Grant was leading the Siege of Vicksburg, Prentiss commanded the troops at Helena, AR.  It was here, on July 4, 1863, that his troops would repulse the Confederates, led by CS Lieutenant General Theophilus Holmes.  After the war, Prentiss would return to Quincy, IL to resume his law practice.
